Then John and I went down to Old Town Albuquerque and had some lunch and wandered into a few art & kitsch shops. We ran a few errands and got to experience a little more of the very laid-back New Mexico customer service (and driving habits.) Even a NorCal resident - I thought WE were laid back - could develop high blood pressure in the shops & restaurants here. It's interesting. Everyone is very nice but a simple transaction takes quite a long time, and if you're third in line you better snag a magazine off the rack to entertain yourself. Also, it's a good thing if you get chips and water in the restaurant, because you may not order for a while.
John took some photos of Steve and me, and I think we got some good ones. So this is my cousin Steve. He has a Master's in Social Work, and was an architectural photographer and magazine publisher in Sacramento for years. Apparently he always had a love of horses, but he never owned one, and I never knew that about him.
Somewhere around age 50, Steve just up and reinvented himself. He moved to New Mexico, bought a horse, learned to ride and drive and train, and now he has eight horses and runs a trail riding, carriage service, and riding lesson business here in Corrales. I wish I had an old family photo to share, of the Steve I grew up with, in tennis shoes and a polo shirt. Because this guy in the boots and hat looks like he was born to it, doesn't he?
I haven't a lot of photos to share today because I have misplaced my little camera. This is a big house with a big outdoors, so I am hoping I will turn it up tomorrow before we leave; but I have been taking it everywhere, and jamming it in my jeans pocket, and Steve was nice enough to let us do a load of laundry, and so I washed my jeans and now they're in the dryer, and la la la la la I am not THINKING about that possibility, no sirree.
I will close, as all Internet posts should, with a baby bunny.
Tomorrow: Madrid!
